plaid shirt spring outfit idea
plaid shirt tied around waist
layered J. Crew plaid shirt
Kate Bosworth inspired outfit
If I wore every outfit I pinned, I'd have really fabulous mom jeans, probably live in Stockholm, and magically look put together riding my fixie bike around all day. But the reality is (like most things on Pinterest) I very rarely recreate my style inspiration boards in real life. Except when Kate Bosworth makes '90s flannel look cool again...then I'll reconsider.

how to wear a summer dress for the holidays
Joie plaid slip dress and gold accessories
how to style a summer dress in winter
fall outfit idea: plaid summer dress and faux leather jacket

It was no surprise that I was able to wear this off-season dress for Thanksgiving. It's been an endless summer and the winter "chill" (aka below 70 degrees) is just setting in this week. In an effort to make this summery slip look a little more seasonal, I decided to pair it with my black faux leather jacket and other dark accessories. I often like to offset one style with another—feminine with tomboy, vintage with modern, summer with winter(ish). I think it makes pulling together outfits a bit more fun. Plus, it allows me to get away with wearing a summer dress in the middle of November. I can honestly say I don't think I'd ever survive a real winter.

Buttoned Up

Monday, November 24, 2014

fall outfit with plaid Equipment blouse
Thanksgiving outfit idea: plaid blouse layered over black dress
fall #outfit idea: layer a button-down over a simple dress
fall #ootd: silk plaid blouse + black dress + ankle boots

You can only wear a button-up so many ways, but I think I've maximized the number of ways to style this Equipment blouse that I got on major discount at their on-site store a couple weeks ago. I don't know if I actively make an effort to not wear form fitting clothes, but the button-up + dress combo is the perfect way to create the illusion of a shift dress with two pieces. I've also found that I can create the illusion of being "fancy" by simply buttoning the top button on said blouse. I briefly considered belting my "fancy" combo but actually prefer the loose, flowy look instead. My days of belting anything and everything are long gone. Replaced with the notion that everything I wear can and should feel (but, hopefully not look) like pajamas.

I will definitely be recreating a similarly comfy look like this for Thanksgiving dinner. Also, not to sound like a broken record/girl without a calendar but WHEN did it become the end of November? I'm tragically unprepared for the holidays and still haven't dry cleaned my party dresses from 2013 (wish I was kidding.)

how to dress up destroyed #denim
Shop this post:
winter #outfit idea: plaid scarf and classic black sweater
how to style destroyed denimwinter #outfit idea: black ankle booties and destroyed #denim
I've seriously had this scarf forever. I'm thinking like freshman year of high school? One of my friends from home gave it to me as a Christmas present, and I've gotten some good use out of it the past 8+ years. If I remember correctly, I'm pretty sure it also survived my trip to Europe and back. I love bringing old pieces like this out of my closet every once in a while. It makes an outfit feel "new" without having to spend the money.

To me, this outfit looks like something I would wear in London. Maybe it's the light destroyed denim with dark boots, but I'd definitely throw this on to adventure around the city. I don't know if it's this rainy LA day, but something in the air is giving me that bittersweet nostalgia I can't quite place.

This plaid number is the newest addition to my collection of printed pants. I suppose you could consider this look an updated version of my original lady suit. Like I've said time and time again, you really can't go wrong with wearing pants that feel like PJ's to work :)

For some reason I haven't had the motivation to blog lately. I've seriously been writing bits and pieces of this one post all weekend. Plus, I have like seven un-blogged outfits photos just waiting in the wings (which never happens). I guess I can blame my lack of posting on adjusting to a new schedule. This was my first official week working full-time after the holidays and I just felt like I had a million things to do every night. Then this weekend, I spent most of Saturday in bed. I wasn't sick, I just literally could not bring myself to do anything except completely veg out. And the highlight of today was taking a field trip to a laundromat in Santa Monica and running errands. So please, don't for one second think I'm living some high-roller-LA-life over here!

These photos were actually taken an embarrassingly long time ago. A month ago maybe? My best friend from home came to visit me, and we decided to have a little photo shoot since we hadn't taken a picture together in who knows how long. I had just bought this plaid blazer and decided to pair it with my go-to striped top for some simple print mixing. I've worn this combo a ton since then, and am becoming pretty keen on plaid.

Okay, here's to being back in the swing of things and hopefully blogging more this week! P.S. Who here is as excited as I am for GIRLS!?

Homebody

Monday, December 2, 2013

Get the look:
If I'm going to be completely honest, I only ventured out of my house a few times over Thanksgiving break...mainly to shop and eat. (Oh, and that one time I felt like exercising.) That's the funny thing about holiday breaks back home. The longer I've been in college, the more LA feels like home to me, rather than my actual hometown. While it will of course always be home, it's just not quite the same anymore. Everything feels a little different, and my chances of running into people I know has dramatically decreased (thank goodness—sorry the introvert in me needed to say it).

I wore this outfit on a quick shopping trip I took with my mom. I snagged this plaid shirt on sale at J.Crew on Black Friday and decided to pair it with my new destroyed jeans for a simple, casual look. I've found myself reaching for button-down shirts a ton lately, so I'm sure I'll be wearing this combo (or one just like it) a lot more this season.

P.S. Happy December! Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go eat a chocolate (or 10) from my TJ's Advent calendar—AKA the best part of December.

Plaid + Lace

This plaid shirt from Anthropologie is one of my go-to tops when I don't know what else to wear. Instead of simply pairing it with jeans, I decided to make my outfit a little more feminine by wearing it with my cream lace skirt. This skirt is one of my favorites and pairs well with a lot of different colors and prints. I think the two pieces worked well together, and it was a great (and comfortable) outfit for my closing shift at work! Sometimes, it's nice to dress a little preppy without being too over the top. I've also noticed that these sunglasses make everything look a little more retro...which I, of course, am perfectly okay with :)

Have a great weekend!

Spring Mix

Monday, April 1, 2013

Sometimes it's nice to wear two trends at once to see how they work together. Such was the case with this outfit. I recently picked up this gingham shirt at Forever 21, after seeing my best friend Hayley wearing it...and deciding I needed it too—this is the only good thing about us living in two different cities! But, because I didn't bring much home for spring break, I didn't have very many bottom options to pair it with. I knew I wanted to wear something more than jeans, so when I saw my mint skirt in my suitcase, I thought it was crazy enough of a combo that it just. might. work. And...I think it did! My whole outfit felt very springy, and I am glad that the more neutral navy color of my gingham shirt was able to off-set the brightness of my mint pleated skirt.

So, here's my little piece of spring styling advice: You never know what will or will not work until you try it on! The great thing about spring is that you can get away with a lot more color and print mixing. So, when you have the chance...go for it!

Holiday Delay

Monday, February 18, 2013

This outfit would have been perfect around Christmastime. But, even though it's about two months late, I still decided to wear it on a chilly February day last week. It was one of those mornings where my brain was only capable of "simple" color matching...I noticed the red in my plaid shirt and could only think to pair it with my bright red pants. I was too tired to care that I looked like Christmas, so that's how this wonderfully festive (belated) holiday look came to be :)

A Very Merry Christmas

Wednesday, December 26, 2012

I recently picked up this plaid shirt from Madewell and I thought it would be perfect to wear on Christmas day, along with the red scarf Andrew's family got me before we left for Ireland. I had a wonderful Christmas morning exchanging gifts at Andrew's house. He got me this adorable bag from Madewell, a scarf, and a world cities calendar from Rifle Paper Co. As you can see from my outfit photos, I couldn't wait to wear my new bag. I was also really happy, because I couldn't wait to give Andrew his new watch. I like it so much...I just might have to steal it from time to time ;)

It was a great morning, even though I wished we could have spent the whole holiday together. I guess I'm still getting used to the fact that we are no longer living together (for now). I shouldn't complain though, since I was able to see him, his family, and then spend the rest of the day with my family. My mom made a huge feast (I helped! I helped!) and I can promise you we will be eating leftovers for the next week I am home...

Merry (day after) Christmas :) I hope you all had a great holiday!
