holiday #style: how to make a little black dress more casual

Over the past few months, I've developed quite the collection of little black dresses. Even though they are starting to make my closet look a bit depressing, they're the perfect piece to dress up or down so I'm going to keep on collecting! I call this my "winter" LBD look. Non-LA readers laugh all you want, but it's actually been scarf weather the past couple...weeks?

On a side note: I just finished watching The Bachelor season premiere. It's my not-so-guilty pleasure and the only show I will angrily live tweet about. Even though every feminist bone in my body pretty much cringes at the thought of 25 women fighting with each other to move to a farm in Iowa...I'm surprisingly invested, and Prince Farming is a keeper. Also, if I were to ever go on the show, I'd probably opt out of the pageant sparkles and into a simple LBD (if the producers would let me.)

Audition tape coming soon...

Buttoned Up

fall outfit with plaid Equipment blouse
Thanksgiving outfit idea: plaid blouse layered over black dress
fall #outfit idea: layer a button-down over a simple dress
fall #ootd: silk plaid blouse + black dress + ankle boots

You can only wear a button-up so many ways, but I think I've maximized the number of ways to style this Equipment blouse that I got on major discount at their on-site store a couple weeks ago. I don't know if I actively make an effort to not wear form fitting clothes, but the button-up + dress combo is the perfect way to create the illusion of a shift dress with two pieces. I've also found that I can create the illusion of being "fancy" by simply buttoning the top button on said blouse. I briefly considered belting my "fancy" combo but actually prefer the loose, flowy look instead. My days of belting anything and everything are long gone. Replaced with the notion that everything I wear can and should feel (but, hopefully not look) like pajamas.

I will definitely be recreating a similarly comfy look like this for Thanksgiving dinner. Also, not to sound like a broken record/girl without a calendar but WHEN did it become the end of November? I'm tragically unprepared for the holidays and still haven't dry cleaned my party dresses from 2013 (wish I was kidding.)

One of the great things about living in LA is finding random bits of art (or "art") throughout the city. I love street murals, so I was excited to find this quirky brick wall in the parking lot of a Buffalo Exchange, of all places. Luckily, I had my camera handy since I had just come from location scouting for a work project, so I insisted that my coworkers take blog photos of me in front of it :)

This outfit is a good example of how I dress down my LBD's for work. I love the lace detailing on the bottom of this dress, but without the right accessories it can feel a little too fancy during the day. So, I paired it with my favorite scarf and brown ankle boots. It's a quick and easy outfit formula to make anything more casual. (A denim jacket/vest is also always a good option.)

Hope you all had a good weekend!

We had a bigger Christmas get-together than usual this year and it was a great holiday. I decided to keep my outfit simple, so I opted for this comfy LBD and dressed it up with a glitzy vintage necklace my grandma gave to me when I was younger. Not that it really matters, since Lucy obviously stole the show in these pictures. However, judging from her quizzical look, she probably wasn't as big of a fan of this Christmas photoshoot as I was.

Happy about it or not, she's still the cutest little bear and a wonderful addition to my family. It's crazy to think my parent got her almost exactly a year ago, since it feels like she has been part of the family forever.

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas! ♥

Shadow

Monday, December 16, 2013

Get the look:
Well, say hello to me and my shadow. I decided to switch up my picture-taking spot, and was left with the harsh lighting of this empty parking lot. But somehow, I think it kind of works with this black and white ensemble. I was going back into my blog archives, and saw I wore some version of this outfit almost exactly two years ago. However, I think I like this dress a little better with a denim vest so you can see the sleeves.

In other news, this weekend was great and felt like it lasted forever. There was lots of celebrating with good friends and it was just what I needed after a stressful couple of weeks. And now...happy Monday!
